About

Joseph Sioui (Wendat Nation) is a drummer, composer, and music researcher based in Denton, Texas. He is currently working as a paid intern at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Loeb Music Library’s “Power of Indigenous Song” initiative.

Joseph’s love for music began with listening to his father’s selection of artists such as Joe Jackson and Buddy Holly. As a teen, his many mentors helped develop appreciation for exploring a variety of styles. Questlove is one of his biggest influences, for his drumming and knowledge. He has always had passion for knowledge and is a life-long learner. Outside of music, Joseph enjoys spending time with family and friends, basketball, and being part of the Native community (Joseph is a part of the Wendat Nation, in Wendake, Quebec).

Education

Joseph holds a BA in Music from the University of North Texas (2019-2023). There, he studied with Stockton Helbing, Quincy Davis, Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, Jose Aponte, and Ed Smith. During his time, Joseph also took the opportunity to learn from Ed Soph, Lynn Seaton, TyShawn Sorey, Tanya Tagaq, and many more. He has studied Wendat music and language with his mentor and Wendat relative, Nathalie Shendaehwas Picard. Joseph worked at the University of North Texas Music Library for over a year as a student desk assistant, where his research on Native music caught the eye of North Texas Music Library Head Susannah Cleveland. He is currently working as a paid intern at Harvard University for the Loeb Music Library’s “Power of Indigenous Song” initiative.
